What is The Vegan Chemist?

Did you know that 80% gelatine that is produced in Europe is extracted from pure pigskin [Gelatine Manufactures of Europe, 2016]. Gelatine is one of the ingredients that is in your basic painkillers such as paracetamol to ibuprofen in capsule form.

Yes, you heard right, our research shows that some of our medicines contains pigskin, beef, hamster ovaries to bird feathers (Newcastle University, 2019)! 

The good news is that there are sometimes alternatives, that don’t contain animal products. Our job is to research these alternatives and so you have choice in your healthcare. 

We know at this time that we can’t get away from the fact that all medications undergo animal testing as part of their development and to help prove medicine safety and effectiveness. What we at The Vegan Chemist are researching is can we find you the medicines you need that do not contain animal-derived ingredients in the finished product. We are solely looking at the content of medication and providing you with a vegan (or vegetarian) alternative. 

Our Story

Vegan chemist was established by Hira , a pharmacist who became fed up of trying to find vegan alternative medicines for her and her patients. 

Originally diagnosed with anaemia herself, Hira found it very difficult to find suitable medication for her.. This resulted in her delaying taking her treatment, making another appointment with the doctor, and not to mention the wastage of unsuitable medication and lots of frustration. Hira finally found a brand that was suitable and was in line with her dietetic needs. From this experience Hira realised that other people were in exactly the same boat – there had to be a better way!

This is when vegan chemist is born.  We are dedicated to (whenever possible) 

• finding you choice when it comes to mediation and dietic needs. 
• creating a different way to and supply vegan medicine to you

So where does vegan chemist come in?

From our experiences as medical health professionals, we investigate and  source alternatives medicines that align with your dietetic needs. We’re sure that you have already found the issues that it is not easy to determine what is and what is not vegan at the point of prescribing or buying.  This is where we come in.*

*At this point in time, there are many instances where a vegan option may not be currently available. It can be dangerous to stop taking the medication without the advice of your healthcare professional. Your health is our top priority ,if the vegan option is not available, you should not put your health at risk and should continue to take the medication. However, if a vegan alternative is not available, and you would like a vegan option, let us know.
